Planting marathon!

The good weather has us planting like mad.   Laid down the final direct seeds of the first main cycle today.  Most this work is for the CSA at this point in the season.   Many of the fields have been organic fertilized and tilled, awaiting another 6 or so cycles of food to get us though till December.   So thankful to have modern equipment this time of year, a nice big tractor and tiller sure beats farming with a horse and plow when you want to really produce enough to feed your community.  We feel so good about keeping our fields organic and seeing how they produce so much food.

We brought our baby seedlings out and sowed seed directly as well. So far we’ve planted….

1/2 the corn crop

beets

Green beans

carrots

purple carrots

kale

cauliflower

Kohlrabi

Radish

Winter Squash

Onions

Garlic

Gold beets

Mix greens

Broccoli

Herbs

Zucchini

Cucumber

Tomatoes

Bell peppers

spinach

Salad turnips

Cabbage

We are even pushing up the planting of some winter squash and sweet corn hoping the weather will not change to our normal gloomy and cloudy May and June.  Radishes were first picked today, along with good amounts of asparagus.    Back to the tractor, for more field work and preparation for the crew for planting the rest of the week.

Happily farming food for nourishment……!
